Harold Gould, the American film and television actor, has died aged 86 after a battle with prostate cancer, reports the New York Times. Gould's career in entertainment spans over five decades, and he specialized in playing well-dressed gentleman in a number of popular sitcoms. He died on Saturday 11th September in Woodland Hills, California.

Gould is perhaps best known for appearing in 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' in the 1970s, as well as in the show's spinoff 'Rhoda', however, he was also a regular guest star on the hit show 'The Golden Girls', playing the charming widower who dates Rose, played by Betty White. Numerous high-profile film roles followed, including a part in the Oscar winning 'The Sting' in 1973, which also starred Paul Newman, and in Woody Allen's 1975 movie 'Love and Death'. In the 1990s, Gould began to perform in theatre, most notably in 'King Lear' at the Utah Shakespeare Festival in 1992.

The actor was still a regular fixture on US television towards the end of his career, and he made an acclaimed appearance in the drama series 'Nip/Tuck'. In total, Gould appeared in more than 300 television shows, as well as in 20 major films, and he was nominated for an Emmy Award five times. He is survived by his wife, three children, and five grandchildren.
