Hansel And Gretel Leads Grimm Weekend
A combination of lousy weather and lousy movies flattened the box office over the weekend. Not a single film crossed the $20-million mark, although the top film, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters lived up to most predictions with an estimated haul of $19 million. Last weekend's winner, the PG-13-rated horror flick Mama, dropped 54.7 percent to place second with about $12.86 million. Still holding strong in its eleventh week was the Weinstein Co.'s ensemble comedy Silver Linings Playbook, which slipped a minute 7 percent to $10 million. But two newcomers, Film District's Parker, directed by Taylor Hackford, and Relativity's all-star Movie 43, tanked, earning around $7 million and $5 million respectively. Overall, the box office was down nearly 20 percent from the same weekend a year ago.
