Hanks Slams Mormon Support Of Gay Marriage Ban

TOM HANKS has hit out at Mormon supporters of the gay-marriage ban in California - calling it "un-American" for homosexuals to be denied the right to wed.
Hanks, who executive produces hit TV series Big Love about a polygamous Mormon family, is convinced U.S. politicians will eventually step in and change the country's laws regarding same-sex unions.
And while he calls polygamy a "bizarre offshoot of the Mormon Church," the actor has hammered some of its followers for their alleged involvement in passing controversial bill Proposition 8 - outraged that modern society can still be prejudiced against gay relationships.
He says, "The truth is that a lot of Mormons gave a lot of money to the church to make Prop-8 happen. There are a lot of people who feel that is un-American and I am one of them.
"I do not like to see any discrimination codified on any piece of paper in any of the 50 states in America.
"A little bit of light can be shed and people can see who's responsible and that can motivate the next go around of our self correcting constitution and hopefully we can move forward instead of backwards. So let's have faith in not only the American, but Californian constitutional process."
Homosexual couples in California were granted the right to wed last year (08) but had their rights revoked just months later after the passing of the bill, which reversed the previous ruling permitting the unions.

You would think that celebrities such as Tom Hanks wouldn't start talking about things which we has no facts about. When they get "ripped" by the Enquirer or Star they get all upset but feel they can do the same thing about other groups. Many actor/actresses live in a fairytale world so I guess they think that whatever they say is true. I really liked Tom Hanks as an actor but I will boycott his movies starting now.I think Tom deserves a little bit on his own medicine.

Mr. Hanks: seem to be all about his rights. But would have us believe that religious bigotry is acceptable.By the way Mr. Hanks California has voted twice now to not accepte gay marriage. And twice the state authorities have attempted to override the will of the people.

So it's "Un-American" for homosexuals to have their rights taken away. But yet... it is "American" for polygamous mormons to have their rights taken away?Isn't there a double standard being applied here by Tom Hanks. What gives him the right to pick and choose which "group" can marry legally and which group can't marry?????Hypocritical and illogical!

It is hard to add any more. I, too, used to like Tom Hanks, but his character has now surfaced. He doesn't have one! America is about free speech, Mr. Hanks. Millions of Christians have spoken. You, my friend, are in the minority. By the way, based on my figures, there are about four times as many Mormons in America as there are gays. Why do we give them so much air time? Because the media disportionately reports on fringe activities and people. Back to Hanks, I completely agree with boycotting his movies. I believe he has a right, just like the rest of us, to express his opinion. But so do I. Let's boycott!

Mr. Hanks is an idiot, he calls the Mormon people who contributed money and efforts to passing prop. 8 Un-American. That is insulting. Many people from other states donated money to BOTH sides of this issue. Just because something is against what he believes doesn't go his way, he tries to make it personal against those who passed it. Mr. Hanks has a right to free speech, but I don't feel he has the right to call ANYONE un-american for doing what their conscience tells them what is right. I find it interesting how much hate is being thrown at the Mormons, attacking them and their temples. Did anyone attack the pope via Hollywood when he spoke at the end of the year about his concerns of gay marriage? Did anyone speak out against the Black Christian Communities? Nope, just against the Mormons. It is absurb.I too will boycott Mr.Hanks movies, and along with any other Hollywood people who shove this crap in my face. I hope Americans wake up soon and see the big picture (not movie) about what is REALLY happening in this country!

first of all... MORMONS ARE NOT POLYGAMISTS!!... haha for a country so worried about being up to times- we sure are stuck in the 1800's with this one. And tom hanks is an idiot. It is very american to stand up for what you believe. If Obama can buy his presidency than the mormons can buy this prop... Who knew the mormons had so much power...

I think when we worry more about what an actor thinks then what God thinks we are all in trouble. While Mr. Hanks is entitled to his opinion, as americans, we are all entitled to ours and to call anyone or any group un american for speaking out on their beliefs and then standing behind what they believe actually is un american. What a hypocrite! Mr. Hanks obviously has forgotten God and is an immoral man.

Obviously none of you are gay, but probably mormon so your comments are biased. There are not 4 xs more mormons than there are gays-40% of the country is mormon? hardly...It is Un American to vote another group's righst away...we are a country based on freedom and the ability to pursue happiness...to deny that is ugly and bigotryCA voted in prop 8 by a SLIM majority-5.6 million to 5 million-next vote we will win (if the CA judges don't overturn it first!!)Polygamy is not the same as two people no matter how you spin it-there are all sorts of legal issues-estate planning. taxes, etc-with gay people, it is two people, just like straights-to confuse it with poygamy is disengenuous-often times in polygamay, there is abuse toward women, too young, brainwashing, etcLastly, Obama will be the first gay president-he will overturn DOMA, he will get rid of dont ask, dont tell, he was against prop 8. he only said he was against gay marraige to get elected-we can all be proud that a black man is president, a black man who learned what many blacks have not-discrimination in all its forms is hideous, ugly and unfairKudos to Tom Hanks!!Loev a Gay Man-married legal;ly in CA 10/11/08
