The production, which has been a hit with critics and fans alike since its opening in February (15), received the Best New American Theatre Work honour at the annual New York ceremony, which celebrates off-Broadway shows.

The news comes just weeks after the production landed 13 Drama Desk and one New York Drama League nomination. It is also set to transfer to Broadway this summer (15).

Another play, The Invisible Hand, came away with two awards, for playwright Ayad Akhtar and actor Usman Ally, and James Houghton was honoured with the Sustained Achievement Award for his work as founding artistic director of Off Broadway's Signature Theater.
