Haim named BBC sound of 2013

Haim have been named the BBC's Sound Of 2013.

The Californian trio of sisters beat AlunaGeorge, Angel Haze, and twelve other acts to claim the top spot in the broadcaster's annual list of bands to watch.

the group - Este, Danielle and Alana Haim - started playing music as children when their parents recruited them into a family covers band.

They join a list of artists who have gone on to great things, as previous winners of the Sound Of title include Adele, Michael Kiwanuka, Jessie J, Mika and Keane.

Este Haim said: ''It's the craziest thing to think we're on a list with so many amazing artists. This year the five bands that were in the list were all female fronted, right?

''We love the UK - the last time we were there, we were there for almost a month and a half. The UK is like a second home.''

The band - who are all under 27 - are also not afraid to admit their influences are a little more classic than most of their peers.

Alana told music streaming service Spotify: ''We couldn't live without Joni Mitchell's 'Blue', Paul Simon's 'Graceland. Tom Petty's 'Damn The Torpedoes' and Destiny's Child, 'The Writing's On The Wall'. That is a big one - that changed our lives.''

Este added: ''We couldn't live without Prince's 'Controversy'. I think that might be the greatest record ever made. I aspire to make a record one iota as cool and as fun as that or 'Purple Rain'. Also, Prince live is the most amazing performer ever. Hit after hit after hit all while wearing a gold sparkly jumper? I'm sure he's an alien.''
