Haggard Returns Home After Cancer Surgery

LATEST: Country star Merle Haggard is making a good recovery following an operation to remove part of his lung.

The singer/songwriter underwent surgery last Monday (03Nov08) at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital in California after a recent biopsy revealed he had non-small cell lung cancer.

The 71-year-old was diagnosed with the malignant tumour in May (08) and despite initially refusing treatment, he bowed to pressure from friends and family to have the growth removed.

Tests revealed that all the affected tissue was successfully removed and the star returned home after the procedure.

In a statement on his website Haggard says, "I'm feeling good ... better and better each day. If not for the love and wisdom of my wife (Theresa), I might not be around today."
