Hollywood Execs Planning To Make The Grumpy Cat The 'New Garfield'
The internet's favorite sour-faced puss is coming to the big screen in it's own feature-length show
For those of us who like to fritter their lives away aimlessly surfing through the internet then chances are you'll be all too familiar with the grumpy cat, famed for it's appearance in a host of memes, the very cat is now being fancied as a movie star and it's owner is currently negotiating a deal to see the feline star in it's own feature-length presentation.
According to Deadline, the internet's favourite grump is being courted by producers Todd Garner (Jack & Jill, the Sorcerer's Apprentice) and Sean Robins (Black Sky), who are planning on bringing the cat - real name Tardar Sauce - to the big screen in a staring, Garfield-like role in it's own movie. The Hollywood pair are said to be in talks with the cat's representative team, headed by manager Ben Lashes and rep Al Hassas, over a feature film that will give the cat the power of talk.
Tardar Sauce has seen it's stock sky-rocket since it first appeared online a few years ago, with it's official YouTube Channel amassing over 120,000 subscribers and over 20 million views already. As well as showing up on the internet on a daily basis, it has also appeared on such shows as Today, Good Morning America, CBS Evening News, Anderson Cooper Live, VH1 Morning Buzz and The Soup.
The project is believed to be high on the priority list for New Line Cinemas, with Mark Steilen (The Pooch and the Pauper) and either Will Ferrell or Jack Black lined-up to appear as a main character or potentially provide the voice of TS. Garner went on to tell Deadline that he believes the project will be a hit with families, saying, You read all of the memes and the comments, and one is funnier than the next. We think we can build a big family comedy around this character.”
Garner is also planning on making a movie about a group of adult men who found internet fame when the story of their almost life-long game of tag went viral. He assume he is already lining up a movie about goats who singer Taylor Swift songs next.
