Green Day Confirm May Release For 21st Century Breakdown

by | 26 March 2009

Green Day's new album 21st Century Breakdown will be released on May 15th, the band have announced.

Their eighth studio album, the collection will be their first since 2004's Grammy winning American Idiot, which went on to sell 12 million copies worldwide.

Like its predecessor, 21st Century Breakdown comes with a narrative structure and tells the story of "a young couple, Christian and Gloria, through the mess and promise of the century so far".

The album is divided into three acts - Heroes and Cons, Charlatans and Saints, and Horseshoes and Handgrenades - and has been some three years in the making.

The punk trio recorded the album with Nevermind producer Butch Vig and its first single - Know Your Enemy - will be released online and physically in April.

Other confirmed song titles include 21 Guns, East Jesus Nowhere, Before the Lobotomy and Restless Heart Syndrome.

A recent Rolling Stone preview feature described the album as "even more ambitious than American Idiot" and said it included "a record of die-hard punk ideals [and] tightly scripted, continually ascending classic-rock excitement."

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool will hit the road in North America in April, with European shows to follow.
