In what is likely to attract just about every baseball fan in the country, the MLB Network is scheduled to rebroadcast Game 7 of the 1960 World Series tonight (Wednesday), regarded by many as the most exciting baseball game of all time. It ended with "the shot heard around the world" -- Bill Mazeroski's ninth inning home run that gave the Pittsburgh Pirates the win and the championship over the New York Yankees. A pristine 16mm kinescope of The Game was recently discovered in singer Bing Crosby's wine cellar in California (there are no other known recordings of it) and digitally enhanced. Crosby was a part owner of The Pirates. He was also a part owner of Ampex, the only company producing video recorders at the time (although the game was apparently not recorded on videotape). The game, which was broadcast during the day, was followed that night by the first televised presidential debate between John Kennedy and Richard Nixon -- and both candidates were later taken to task by TV critics for failing to mention the game in their presentations.
