Gotye - Gotye Rules Aria Awards With Four Wins

29 November 2012

Singer/songwriter Gotye outshone the competition at the annual Australian Record Industry Association (Aria) Awards in Sydney on Thursday (29Nov12), triumphing in four out of the five categories he was nominated in.

The Somebody That I Used To Know hitmaker ruled Australia's most prestigious music prize-giving, winning the night's top award, Best Album, for his Making Mirrors record, as well as being named Best Male Artist.

He also picked up awards for Best Pop Release and Best Australian Live Act.

Gotye, real name Wouter De Backer, remained modest as he took to the stage, urging fans to listen to his rival musicians' music, as well as his own.

He said, "Gosh I've been standing up here a lot. There are a bunch of fantastic albums, especially by Australian artists, that I fell in love with this year... so keep listening to records, keep buying records."

New Zealand singer Kimbra, who collaborated with Gotye on worldwide smash Somebody That I Used to Know, was named Best Female Artist, while The Temper Trap went home with Best Group and Best Rock Album for the band's eponymous 2012 release.

Aboriginal music icons Yothu Yindi were inducted into the Aria Hall of Fame.

British-Irish boyband One Direction won the Best International Artist trophy, but could not make it to the ceremony.

International superstars Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj and Russell Brand were among the celebrities who handed out prizes at the bash, which was held at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, while Swift and Kimbra performed.
