Good News, Bad News For Script Writers
Despite the increase in the number of unscripted reality shows on the major broadcast networks and cable channels, television writers saw their income grow in 2010, the Writers Guild of America reported on Friday. Total earnings rose 2.9 percent to a news record of $532.1 million, the guild said, while residuals increased by 12.8 percent to $160.43 million. Residuals for cable reuse soared 32.5 percent to $20.94 million, while foreign reuse increased a whopping 18.9 percent to $29.29 million. The news was not so bright for motion picture screen writers whose total earnings of $393 million during the year was down 10 percent from 2009. The number reflected the fact that number of screenwriters who reported earnings fell 13 percent versus the 2009 figure.
