Glover Leads Oscars Hugo Boss Boycott
Actor DANNY GLOVER is calling for stars to boycott fashion label Hugo Boss at Sunday night's (07Mar10) Oscars ceremony - to protest the company's plans to move their production lines to Europe.
The Lethal Weapon star has written a letter to all nominees and presenters, informing them that the fashion house is closing its Cleveland, Ohio plant in April (10), causing the loss of 400 jobs.
And he wants the stars to make a patriotic stand, writing, "The workers are productive and the plant is profitable, but Hugo Boss has decided it can make even more profit by moving the production to Turkey or Eastern Europe.
"Hugo Boss says it wants to expand business in this country, and the brand depends on Hollywood cachet. Please tell the world you won't be wearing Hugo Boss on March 7."
Glover has also asked stars like George Clooney, Sean Penn and Morgan Freeman to wear a pin on their tuxedos with the message, 'Keep the Hugo Boss Plant Open'.
In a statement about the Cleveland plant, Hugo Boss representatives defended the move, saying, "The Cleveland Hugo Boss facility is not globally competitive. Hugo Boss tried in vain to find ways to make it globally competitive, and when that effort failed, we acted in the best interests of shareholders and customers by deciding to close the facility."
