Glenn Close - Glenn Close On Her Oscar Chances For 'Albert Nobbs'

Close - who has a history of playing iconic female characters - portrays an Irish woman disguised as a man in her latest movie, and has spent 15 years trying to get the project to the screen. Speaking to Gayle King on CBS show 'This Morning', the actress said the role was a favorite of hers more than 30 years ago, saying, "I first played Albert...in a little off-Broadway house, The Manhattan Theater Club, so every night you had a very intimate relationship to what was going on, on stage and what people were feeling in the audience. And every night, this seemingly simple story blindsided the audience emotionally". Based on the short story by Irish novelist George Moore, 'Albert Nobbs' sees Close playing a woman who attempts to pass as a man in order to survive in Ireland in the 1910's - however, some thirty years after donning men's clothing, she finds herself trapped inside a prison of her own making. Glenn received her sixth Academy Award nomination on Tuesday, but an Oscar win still eludes her. On her chances of toppling the likes of Streep, Viola Davis, Rooney Mara and Michelle Williams to this year's prize, Close said, "At that level, you know, to me, everybody is a winner. I know that sounds unreal. But I really feel that".

Viola Davis - who's nominated for The Help - was a little more forthcoming during a recent interview with CNN's Showbiz Tonight, saying, "I can whoop Meryl Streep's behind in a good, old fashioned street fight.Now, as far as the Oscars, I'm not sure about that".
