Glastonbury Revellers Brave Further Rain

by | 23 June 2007

The second full day of Glastonbury is underway and there is little respite in the weather conditions for the embattled festival-goers who awoke to further Somerset rain.

Some parts of the Worthy Farm site are already waterlogged, but it seems the £750,000 drainage investment made by organiser Michael Eavis to keep the mud at bay is in the large part working.

Certainly it did not stop headliners the Arctic Monkeys attracting a huge crowd to the Pyramid Stage for their headline set last night.

The Sheffield band enjoyed a triumphant gallop through tracks from the debut album, Whatever You Say I Am That's What I'm Not, and its follow-up, Favourite Worst Nightmare.

On the second stage Arcade Fire brought their art rock sound to bear on the huddled masses while Amy Winehouse, Kasabian and veteran Icelandic icon Bjork also performed in a packed line-up.

Today's schedule sees the Killers battle for fans with Iggy and the Stooges who top the bill on the second stage, while Lily Allen will probably be courting controversy having been granted a slot on the Pyramid stage in mid-afternoon.

Just like the weather, crime figures appear to have changed little from the last time the festival was staged in 2005.

The police reported 163 offences coming to their attention by Saturday morning with 121 arrests made.
