Gibson Offers Aid To Mexico's Poor

Braveheart star Mel Gibson is donating money to build houses for poor people in Mexico to thank them for their help and generosity while he was filming his new movie APOCALYPTO in the region.
The Oscar winner is currently wrapping up the film in the jungles of Mexico's Veracruz estate and will make the donation through the Rotary Club and Mexico's family-welfare agency.
The money will be used to construct homes for poor residents of the port city of Veracruz and the city of San Andres Tuxtla, according to a news release issued late Thursday (13JUL06) by state officials.
Apocalypto is set 500 years ago in Central America and will be spoken in an obscure Mayan dialect, much the same way Gibson used Aramaic and Latin for his religious blockbuster The Passion Of The Christ.
This is not Gibson's first demonstration of generosity to Mexico - last October (05) he met with President VINCENTE FOX to announce that he would donate $1 million (GBP555,000) to help Mexico recover from Hurricane Stan, which left more than 1,500 people dead or missing in Central America and Mexico.
