Gervais Vows To Pour On Insults At Golden Globes
If you thought that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association extracted a promise from Ricky Gervais that he would tone down his remarks about celebrities, the HFPA, and movies in general, you thought wrong. In a Twitter post, Gervais indicated that he was even reluctant to accept the offer to return as host of the Golden Globes in January. "It was a tough decision to be honest. There were many pros and cons. I loved doing it, but I was worried that I couldn't improve on last year," he wrote. Moreover, he added, "I knew some people would be uncomfortable with me being host. (This was a pro by the way.)" So why did he finally agree to accept the gig again? Well, he said, he wanted to "shut up all those f***ing idiots who said that I'd never be invited back. Is that the wrong reason to do something? Ha ha. I think it is." Once again, Gervais defended his insult-strewn performance a year ago as he did after the initial deluge of criticism. "The outrage I caused was of course, as usual, totally out of proportion to the things I said. I don't think anyone had any right to be offended but they were." So will he indeed show greater restraint this year? Far from it, he indicated. "This year I'm going to make sure their offense is completely justified."
