Gerardo Ortiz - Gerardo Ortiz Wins Six Prizes At Mexican Music Awards
Singer Gerardo Ortiz was the toast of the Billboard Mexican Music Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday night (20Oct11) after scooping up six honours, including the coveted Artist of the Year.
The hardcore corrido singer also took home New Artist of the Year, Male Artist of the Year and Albums Artist of the Year and Norteno Artist of the Year prizes, and capped off the evening by picking up the Vocal Event Song of the Year award for his Calibre 50 collaboration Culiacan vs. Mazatlan.
Thursday night's success comes just seven months after Ortiz narrowly survived an ambush in Colima, Mexico, that claimed the life of his cousin and business manager Ramiro Caro and their driver.
Other multiple award winners included Larry Hernandez, Vicente Fernandez and Julion Alvarez y su Norteno Banda.
Hernandez's haul included Songs Artist of the Year and Norteno Song of the Year, while Mexican music veteran Fernandez took home the Ranchero/Mariachi Artist of the Year and Ranchero/Mariachi Album of the Year prizes.
