Country music legend George Hamilton Iv is recovering in a Nashville, Tennessee hospital after suffering a heart attack over the weekend (13-14Sep14).

The 77 year old remains in critical condition but is resting comfortably, according to a post on his website.

A spokesman for the Abilene singer says, "He and his family greatly appreciate your ongoing prayers and respect for their privacy at this personal time."

Hamilton was mentored by fellow legend Chet Atkins and toured with Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers.

He was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1960 and in the early 1970s, he was named the International Ambassador of Country Music, after becoming the first country singer to perform in the Soviet Union.
