"Gentleman" Robin Thicke Defends 'Blurred Lines'

Robin Thicke and Pharrell William's single "Blurred Lines" has created controversy in the UK. It stayed at No.1 in the UK chart for a number of weeks. Owing its prominence, it has been under scrutiny with a number of charities commenting upon certain readings of its lyrics.

Katie Russell, speaking on behalf of the charity Rape Crisis, said "the lyrics of 'Blurred Lines' seem to glamourize violence against women and to reinforce rape myths, which we [Rape Crisis] strive to dispel". This is primarily due to the number of possible readings of the song's lyrics for instance "nothing like your last guy/he don't smack that ass and pull your hair like that".  As well as the repeated line "I know you want it".

In an interview with BBC's Radio One, Thicke called the criticism "ridiculous" and that he couldn't "dignify that with a response". Thicke went on to say "I don't want to be sleazy", unfortunately the video is anything but tasteful with a number of models being ogled by Thicke and Pharrell. The unrated version features the same women wandering around topless. According to Thicke it was his wife who encouraged this version to go ahead, she apparently said 'you have to put this out, this is so sexy and so cool'.

He attempted to explain the lyrics saying "for me it's about blurring the lines between men and women and how much we're the same". Thicke believes there are 'blurred lines' between "a good girl and a bad girl, and even very good girls all have little bad sides to them".

How incredibly deep, eloquent and perceptive.

He continued to say "I'm a gentleman, I've been in love with the same woman since I've been a teenager" and that he didn't "want to do anything inappropriate". The woman in question is actress Paula Patton who had roles in films such as Hitch and Ghost Protocol.

However if he is such a "gentleman", it does beg the question why the women in the video have to be topless at all, let alone why they're only wearing what appears to be flesh coloured tooth floss.
