'General Hospital' Cleans Up At Daytime Emmy Awards
The cast and crew of 'General Hospital' left Saturday's Daytime Emmy Awards (June 23, 2012) with no fewer than five awards to their name - an impressive haul for the soap, which has been running since 1963 and currently stars Maurice Bernard and Laura Wright. The show took home the coveted 'Drama Series' gong, as well as awards for Lead Actor in a Drama Series (for Anthony Geary), Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Nancy Lee Grahn) and its male counterpart, for Jonathan Jackson. The series' directorial team also got their own award for their work on the programme.
The Today show also made headlines, taking home the Best Morning Show award, despite having publicly slipped in the ratings and level-pegging with Good Morning America. 'Today' has been in the headlines of late due to the dismissal of Ann Curry. The show's producers have widely blamed Curry for the programmes' waning popularity. The game show Jeopardy also triumphed at Saturday night's awards.
The lifetime achievement award was presented to Bill Geddie, the executive producer of the ABC network show The View. It was the icing on the cake for Abc, who landed the most nominations of the evening (56) and emerged triumphant with five wins. The awards ceremony took place at the Beverly Hilton, despite police launching an investigation into two deaths at the hotel the previous night.
