Geena Davis - Geena Davis Introduces Bill In Washington, D.c.
Actress Geena Davis visited Washington, D.C. on Wednesday (13Jul11) to lobby for a bill encouraging positive portrayal of women in the media.
The Thelma & Louise star travelled to Capitol Hill to promote the legislation, which would promote gender equality and hand out grants for youth empowerment groups.
A statement from Davis, obtained by Reuters, reads: "What children see affects their attitudes toward male and female roles and impacts the value they place on girls and women in society. The Healthy Media for Youth Act will help ensure we are creating a positive media environment for all our children."
Davis has also called for the launch of a National Taskforce on Women and Girls in the Media, which would address body image issues for youngsters and improve images of female stars in the film industry.
She adds, "When there is a woman working as a writer or producer in a film, there is a greater chance that the film will include more positive images of women and girls."
