Gcb Debuts; Tv Survives
GCB , based on Kim Gatlin's saucy novel Good Christian Bitches , premiered ...er ... modestly on ABC Sunday night, a sort of Southern companion to the network's Desperate Housewives , which precedes it. The show drew 7.60 million viewers, losing 7 percent of Housewives' audience. Nevertheless, that was enough to edge out the second hour of Donald Trump's Celebrity Apprentice with 6.97 million total viewers, but it fell behind Trump's show among viewers 18-49. The show drew mixed reviews. Verne Gay in Newsday said that it's "only intermittently sharp or funny." Maureen Ryan, writing for the Huffington Post, asked, "Is it a cartoonish, silly soap with undertones of dislike for women, Christians and Texans, or a mildly absurd, comedic Drama about a formerly rich person seeking forgiveness?" David Wiegand of the San Francisco Chronicle commented "The trouble is that GCB may be someone's idea of Christian but it's not really good -- just so-so -- and one reason it's not good is that it's not really very bitchy -- just annoying." On the other hand, Damian Holbrook at TVGuide.com remarked, "At its flashy, campy heart, is a blessedly sincere reap-what-you-sow tale of redemption." In any event, the clear winner in the 10 00 p.m. time period Sunday night was CBS's CSI Miami with 10 million viewers.
