G.i. Joe: Retaliation A Big Hit In China, Too

In yet another reminder of the importance of the Chinese box office, G.I. Joe: Retaliation became the No. 1 film overseas with an estimated $60 million, thanks in large part to $33 million pouring in from China. With the massive escalation of cinema construction on the mainland, it would appear that we are fast approaching the time that whatever film is No. 1 in China will also wind up as No. 1 abroad. Oblivion placed second overseas with $33.7 million. The film opened abroad one week prior to its domestic debut and has now earned $112 million at the foreign box office. The fifth week of Fox/DreamWorks Animation's The Croods came in third with $23.4 million to bring its foreign take to $275 million, while the Jackie Robinson biopic 42 scored with $18 million. All other major overseas releases chalked up single-digit earnings.
