From John Carter To The Avengers -- What A Ride!
Disneyland's Matterhorn roller-coaster ride has nothing on the ups and downs of Disney's movies over the past few weeks. After experiencing one of the worst, if not the worst, box office disasters in history a few weeks ago with John Carter , Disney, via its Marvel unit, has roared back with the biggest weekend box office in history with The Avengers. "A misstep is avenged," commented the Wall Street Journal as final figures for the weekend were tallied at $207.4 million domestically. That figure shattered the previous record of $169.2 million set last year by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-- Part 2 . Virtually every IMAX theater was sold out as the big-screen company reported a domestic record of $15.3 million for The Avengers. Disney further observed that the worldwide total for the Marvel movie has reached $654.8 million in just 12 days. While all of that was happening, Lionsgate, with little promotion, opened the Miley Cyrus comedy LOL in 105 theaters, where it earned $46,500 or just $440 per theater.
