The veteran star passed away on Wednesday (16Sep15) after collapsing on a sidewalk in Paris on the way to a hair appointment. Reports suggest he suffered a heart attack.

His spokesman Fabien Lecoeuvre says, "He died... on the way to the hair salon. He fell on the pavement and he could not be resuscitated."

French President Francois Hollande has since paid tribute to Beart, hailing him as an "incomparable talent," adding, "His words are on the lips of French people of all generations."

Beart enjoyed a prolific music career which spanned more than six decades and he was one of the country's best known crooners. He also wrote songs for other artists and enjoyed a stint in TV. Beart was awarded top literary prize the Grand Prix du roman de l'Academie Francaise in 1994.

His daughter is actress Emmanuelle Beart.
