Free: 'Kosoff's Drug Problems Ruined Us'

Rock band FREE blame their ultimate demise on the drug problems of late guitarist PAUL KOSOFF, because their fans ended up pitying them. Kosoff, who died of a drug-induced heart attack in 1976, frequently let the ALL RIGHT NOW rockers down on stage with his substance-addled performances. Drummer SIMON KIRKE says, "The feeling of hopelessness was crushing. One example among many was the Royal Albert Hall. "When we got on stage, whatever he was on kicked in and he spent the whole show playing behind everyone else. "We should have been booed off but it was as thought the audience was crying with us. You can't have too many of those kinds of days and we had quite a few. "His battle with drugs was a millstone which finally helped bury us."
