For Nbc, Olympics Were Like Must-see-tv All Over Again

NBC's second-week coverage of the Olympics was down somewhat from the opening week, but by adding the Sunday wrap-up show London Gold to its schedule, the network managed to win the top eight positions on the Nielsen ratings list. The top spot went to Tuesday's coverage, which drew 30.15 million viewers and scored an overall household rating of 17.6 and a 29 share. Sunday's Closing Ceremony actually drew more viewers, 31.01 million but placed second with a 17/27 simply because more people watch television on Sunday night than on Tuesday. The only two shows that made Nielsen's top ten were repeats of CBS's NCIS with 6.84 million viewers and 60 Minutes, with 6.29 million. The NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams continued to benefit from the network's Olympics coverage, as it averaged 9.78 million viewers for the week. The surprising thing was that the other two evening newscasts did as well as they did, with both far exceeding their respective networks' average entertainment ratings. ABC World News with Diane Sawyer averaged 6.76 million viewers and the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley averaged 5.38 million viewers. For the week, NBC came in way ahead of its competitors with a 15.1 household rating and a 25 share. CBS was a distant second with a 2.8/5. ABC finished third with a 2.0/3, while Fox trailed with a 1.4/2.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research 1. Summer Olympics (Tuesday), NBC, 17.6/29; 2. Summer Olympics Closing Ceremony, NBC, 17.0/27; 3. Summer Olympics (Wednesday), NBC, 16.8/28; 4. Summer Olympics (Monday), NBC, 15.8/25; 5. Summer Olympics (Thursday), NBC, 13.6/23; 6. Summer Olympics (Friday), NBC, 13.2/24; 7.
