For Colored Girls Movie Smashed At Box Office By Megamind
TYLER PERRY's new movie 'For Colored Girls', based on NTOZAKE SHANGE'S ground-breaking play, has been beaten to the US box office number one by the animated film 'Megamind', reports the Los Angeles Times. Perry's gritty story of womanhood was expected to perform well on its opening weekend but its $20.1 million takings were at the low end of projections.
'For Colored Girls', which stars WHOOPI GOLDBERG and JANET JACKSON, was in competition with two big budget movies that were also released this weekend; 'Due Date' starring ZACH GALIFIANAKIS, and the aforementioned 'Megamind'. It was the latter movie that took the top spot, taking an estimated $47.7 million, with 'Due Date' following closely behind taking $33.5 million. 'Megamind' is the latest creation from DreamWorks Animation and features the voices of WILL FERRELL and TINY FEY.
Despite only taking third place at the box-office, 'For Colored Girls' has been acclaimed by critics. The Examiner noted, "There is nothing to smile about in this 125 minute presentation. Instead of smiling, one's jaw will be dropping. Powerful dialogue and just as powerful performances will have the audience in a choke-hold. Which slowly tightens as the story unfolds".
