Five Grammys For Winehouse

Amy Winehouse has scooped five prizes at the Grammy Awards despite being unable to attend the Los Angeles ceremony.

The Back to Black star was named best new artist while also claiming the record of the year and song of the year gongs for her hit single Rehab.

The 24-year-old missed out in the best album category to Herbie Hancock - whose win for his Joni Mitchell tribute River: The Joni Letters, was a major shock - Winehouse also claimed the best pop vocal album prize.

Winehouse had briefly left a north London rehabilitation clinic to apply for a US visa this week, but the embassy's rejection of her efforts meant she was forced to perform and accept her awards via a satellite link, as a later reversal of the decision came at too late a stage to allow her to travel to the US.

Hugging her mother as she accepted the record of the year award for Rehab, Winehouse thanked her family, producer Mark Ronson - who was named producer of the year - and "my Blake incarcerated", referring to her husband Blake Fielder-Civil, currently in Pentonville prison in London awaiting trial on charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice and grievous bodily harm.

Kanye West was the other big winner at the show, taking four awards for best rap song, best rap album, best rap solo performance and best rap performance by a duo or group.

The hip-hop star dedicated the best rap album prize to his late Donda, who died in November.

"It would be in good taste to stop The Music," he said when the ceremony band began playing to cut short his speech, adding: "I know you're really proud of me right now and I know you want me to be the number one artist in the world.

"And mama, all I'm going to do is keep making you proud. We run this."

Bruce Springsteen won three awards, while several artists, including Justin Timberlake, the White Stripes, Mary J Blige and Carrie Underwood took two.
