Fiona Receives Ascap Honour
R&B newcomer MELANIE FIONA has been honoured for her songwriting skills by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) during a ceremony in New York.
The singer, co-signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation label, was one of three honorees at the Second Annual ASCAP Presents... Women Behind The Music Series on Thursday (14Oct10), and was presented with a special glass trophy for her work by Nicole George, ASCAP's vice president of membership, rhythm and soul.
And Fiona, who received her first Grammy Award nomination earlier this year (10), is delighted to have received such high praise from the prestigious organisation.
She tells WENN, "It feels so great. I don't ever expect anything, I don't know what's gonna happen, I just got to do what I think is good and right for me as an artist, and it's overwhelming to see my name Grammy nominated for something I didn't even expect to happen so early on in my career and now this ASCAP honour. I must be doing something right!"
Fiona was feted alongside RCA Music Group/Sony Music Entertainment's Senior Vice President of Marketing, Carolyn Williams, and entertainment attorney Motisola Zulu.
The New York prizegiving came two days after former Destiny's Child star Kelly Rowland was honoured at a similar ASCAP celebration in Atlanta, Georgia on Tuesday (12Oct10).
Another event will be held in Los Angeles on 27 October (10) to celebrate the career of singer and musician Sheila E.
