Ex-news Corp Lawyer Arrested In Hacking Scandal
In a surprising development, Scotland Yard has arrested Tom Crone, the former legal adviser to News International, on suspicion of telephone hacking. In 2010, Crone and Colin Myler, the editor of the now defunct News of the World, testified that they had informed News International CEO James Murdoch that there was evidence that telephone hacking at the Sunday tabloid extended beyond a single "rogue" reporter, as had been previously claimed. Murdoch later denied that he had received such information from Crone and Myler. His father, Rupert Murdoch, later maintained that Crone had in fact attempted to cover up the hacking activity and keep News Corp executives in the dark about it. The London Daily Telegraph reported today (Thursday) that Crone's arrest was triggered by evidence presented to police by News Corp's Management and Standards Committee, which had been set up to launch an internal investigation of the scandal. Crone's arrest brings to 25 the number of persons detained by police in connection with the phone-hacking investigation.
