The remake of horror classic Evil Dead has scared up a storm to debut atop the U.S. box office.
The modern take on Sam Raimi's cult 1981 film, directed by Fede Alvarez, opened with a gross of $26 million (£16.25 million), enough to leave animated caveman adventure The Croods and G.I. Joe: Retaliation trailing behind.
Early estimates suggest the two films both boast weekend takings of $21.1 million (£13.19 million) to tie in second, although exact figures and placings will not be determined until Monday morning (08Mar13).
Meanwhile, the 3D release of dinosaur action adventure Jurassic Park also fared well, drawing $18.2 million (£11.38 million) to land at number four, followed by Olympus Has Fallen at five with $10 million (£6.25 million).
