Evangeline Lilly - Evangeline Lilly And Benedict Cumberbatch Cast In 'The Hobbit'
Evangeline Lilly, the Canadian actress best known for her role on Hbo's 'Lost', has joined the cast of Peter Jackson's highly anticipated adaptation of 'The Hobbit. In a Facebook post over the weekend, Jackson confirmed Lilly would join British actor Benedict Cumberbatch and comedian Barry Humphries as the latest additions to the ever-expanding cast.
The director said Evangeline would play a newly created elf character named 'Tauriel', writing, "Her name means 'daughter of Mirkwood' and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.)". Humphries, best known for his alter-ego Dame Edna Everage, will play the 'Goblin King', "in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum" while 'Sherlock' star Cumberbatch will provide the voice of the dragon 'Smaug'. Jackson concluded his post by writing, "I cannot wait to get stuck into these new scenes!" The $500 million fantasy adventure movie is finally underway after a series of delays that left the project in serious jeopardy. Guillermo Del Toro was initially confirmed to direct the film, but eventually walked away following the financial failings of studio Mgm.
Since her six-season stint on 'Lost', Evangeline Lilly has worked on the action-drama movie 'Real Steel' with Hugh Jackman and Kevin Durand. The film, a sci-fi boxing drama set in the near-future, is scheduled for release on 7th October 2011.
