Ernest Borgnine Of Marty And Mchale's Navy Fame Dead At 95
Ernest Borgnine, best known for his Oscar-winning performance in the title role of 1955's Marty and -- again in the title role -- for the 1960s' TV series McHale's Navy , has died of renal failure in Los Angeles at age 95. Active to the end, he received the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement award just last year. Borgnine played the gamut of film roles, from depraved bad guys, as he did in From Here to Eternity , to an elderly superhero, as he did -- voice only -- in the animated kids show SpongeBob SquarePants . He seemed to love the spotlight and often behaved as if it were forever following him. Walking into an office, he would often wave enthusiastically to the staff and gladly sign autographs. He never appeared to tire of the work. At the age of 92, he received an Emmy nomination for his work on the NBC drama E.R.
