Elton John Donates Motorcycles To African Charity
Music legend SIR ELTON JOHN has donated 120 motorcycles to the African nation of Lesotho - so doctors and nurses can treat medical emergencies in the mountainous state. The singer travelled into Lesotho during a tour of South Africa with his partner David Furnish, and handed over the bikes in a ceremony just outside of the capital Maseru on Saturday (19Jan08). The donation is part of the Riders for Health Programme, which John funds through his Elton John Aids Foundation. He told members of the local media, "We want to improve the transport system by bringing health care to millions of people living in the most rural areas and thus making a difference in their lives." Lesotho's Health Ministry spokesman Tumisang Mokoai says, "The nurses and doctors will have transport to follow up patients in the villages to support community health workers. The motorcycles will be distributed to all health centres in Lesotho." Lesotho is one of Africa's poorest countries and 23 per cent of 15 and 49 year olds are HIV positive.
