Ellen Barkin - Ellen Barkin Wants To Have Tea With Activists Opposed To Her New Show

Actress Ellen Barkin has invited officials of the watchdog group urging advertisers to boycott her new TV show to join her for tea - and talk about their issues.
Activists at the One Million Moms group are appalled by The New Normal's storyline, in which two gay men attempt to have a child with a surrogate - and they have launched a campaign in a bid to make sure the upcoming comedy series is a flop.
The bosses at one TV network in Utah have already pulled the plug on the show, determining it's not suitable for their viewers.
Barkin is convinced the activists won't succeed in persuading big companies to pull endorsements for what looks like becoming one of the biggest new shows this autumn (12), but she'd still like to sit down with them to discuss why they are so appalled by the storyline.
She tells WENN, "I sent out a tweet asking the One Million Moms, who are, I think, 3,000 moms, to meet me for tea and let’s talk about it (and) you know, they didn’t answer back. I guess their position would be, 'Well, you know, we know where she stands... and so we have nothing to say.' That’s what makes this country divisive."
Meanwhile, the actress is still puzzled about the decision not to air The New Normal on Utah's Ksl - because executives at the network are happy to broadcast hard-hitting dramas like one of her favourite shows, Law & Order: Svu.
She adds, "Why is a show like The New Normal, about a very loving, committed, same sex couple wanting to raise a child explicit and offensive, and rape, murder, child slavery, in very graphic detail, is not - with very graphic language.
"They let your children watch a TV show where they use words like anal tearing and vaginal tearing and child slavery... but watching two men kiss each other and cry because they’ve decided to raise a child together... I don’t get it."
