Elizabeth Smart - Elizabeth Smart 'Kidnap Victim' Becomes Abc Star
Elizabeth Smart, the 23-year-old woman from Salt Lake City who was abducted in 2002, has agreed to join Abc as a contributor, the network announced on Thursday (7th June 2011). Smart, who was held for nine months after being snatched from her bedroom at the age of 14, will work on missing persons stories.
Elizabeth will appear across all Abc News programs and platforms and could be on the air within the next few weeks. Spokeswoman Julie Townsend said, "She'll help our viewers better understand missing person stories from someone with the perspective to know what a family experiences when a loved one goes missing. And her contributions will be focused on looking ahead, not looking back at her own story". Smart was kidnapped at knifepoint by a homeless street preacher and forced to wander from town to town for nine months. She was eventually spotted by passers-by in a Salt Lake City suburb in 2003. Her composure since the ordeal is said to have impressed Abc bosses.
Elizabeth Smart's abductor was sentenced to life imprisonment in May. She famously confronted him in court and told him that she had "a wonderful life now".
