Elbow Album Tops Music Critics' Annual 'Poll Of Polls'

by | 30 December 2008

Mancunian quintet Elbow have crowned a successful 2008 by winning the HMV 'Poll of Polls' survey.

The indie five-piece won the Mercury Music Prize earlier this year for The Seldom Seen Kid, with their 18-year career finally garnering mainstream success.

And after well-received festival appearances and selling out tickets for their upcoming arena tour, Guy Garvey and co have topped the annual HMV list - collated through nominations from music writers across specialist press, national media and online sites.

The Seldom Seen Kid held off the challenge of Portishead's comeback album Third, as well as Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' acclaimed return and the debut albums by Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend.

"The poll reflects an excellent, eclectic year in music with some exciting new artists featuring prominently," said Damian Evans, rock and pop buyer for the music retailer.

"Fleet Foxes, Vampire Weekend, MGMT and Bon Iver have really made their mark with wonderful debut albums, underlining how vibrant the music scene is right now.

"Established artists such as Portishead, Nick Cave and Metallica have also returned to great acclaim, although I suspect few people would dispute that Elbow have given us the album of the year. They were popular winners of the Nationwide Mercury Prize, and they now deservedly top the HMV Poll of Polls as well."

The top twenty albums on the HMV 'Poll of Polls' are

1 Elbow / The Seldom Seen Kid
2 Portishead/ Third (17 / 232)
3 Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds / Dig Lazarus, Dig
4 Fleet Foxes / Fleet Foxes
