Barenaked Ladies frontman Ed Robertson co-hosted Live! With Kelly today (May 29, 2012). The 41 year old shared his tale of dining with Michelle Obama recently, with the audience. Or, rather, he was in the same restaurant as Michelle Obama, at least, even if he didn't manage to get a peek at what the first lady had on her plate that evening. Robertson joined the show, with Kelly Ripa, as the latest in a string of guest hosts following Regis Philbin's departure, with these guesting slots seen by some as informal auditions for a permanent slot on the show.

When Ed was dining at New York's exclusive ABC Diner restaurant, he spotted Michelle at a nearby table. "If you're wondering what she had, it was the extremely toned arms," he joked, before adding "I tried to look several times but my wife kept going, 'Stop staring!'" Robertson joined in with the wisecracks throughout the show, flunking a spelling bee, making jokes about YouTube videos and making light of some recent news stories, quipping that he thought Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg was "the one from Saturday Night Live, right?"

Later, Ed welcomed American Idol runner up Jessica Sanchez onto the show, and joked that he could see himself writing all her hits. Sanchez performed Whitney Houston's 'I Will Always Love You' and taking a rare serious pause, Robertson insists that he has the utmost respect for talent show contestants such as Jessica: "I'm always blown away by the people on these shows because I would be thrown off these shows ... I would never make the audition, and I've sold 14 million records."
