Jazz icon and drumming mentor Freddie Gruber has died in Los Angeles at the age of 84.
Gruber was a big name in New York's Bebop scene and performed with the likes of Charlie Parker, but he's best known for teaching rock legends like Rush's Neil Peart, Vinnie Colaiuta, Journey's Steve Smith and Dave Weckl learn how to incorporate jazz stylings into their work.
Last year (10), cymbal manufacturers Zildjian presented Gruber with a lifetime achievement award.
The singer was discovered dead on Thursday morning.
