Downloaded, Film About Birth Of Piracy Debuts At Sxsw

If ever there was a film just daring to be downloaded illegally, it's Downloaded, a documentary film screened Sunday at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, TX. The film by director Alex Winter, tells the story of Napster, which turned the music industry upside down between 1999 and 2001 by allowing users to share music with one another over the Internet for free, until court challenges by the Recording Industry Association of America shut it down. Two founders of Napster, Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker, appear in the movie. During a Q&A period at the festival Fanning remarked that as a 19-year-old he had no idea in the beginning that we were going to change the world. Winter said that he was of two minds while making the film: I have really close friends in the record industry who've lost their jobs, and really close friends who are musicians who can't make a living anymore, he told the Los Angeles Times. I understood why it wasn't that easy for the record industry to make a 180-degree turn. People can get very black and white about this stuff, but I think it's very gray.
