Domingo Urges Early Cancer Checks
Spanish opera star PLACIDO DOMINGO is urging fans to get tested for cancer regularly, a month after doctors surgically removed a tumour from his colon.
The 69-year-old tenor was forced to put his world tour on hold after suffering abdominal pain during a performance in Tokyo, Japan on 13 February (10).
Doctors found a cancerous polyp on his colon, and the singer underwent surgery at New York's Mount Sinai Hospital to have it removed.
And now Domingo is urging others to make cancer checks a priority.
He tells Reuters, "To hear the word tumour certainly scares you. I'm making a recommendation to everyone to get the checks... It only takes half an hour or 40 minutes."
Domingo is expected to make a full recovery and will return to singing in public for a production of Simon Boccanegra at Milan, Italy's La Scala on 16 April (10).
