Doctor Who 3-D Special On The Way

The 'Doctor Who' 50th anniversary show will be in 3D.

The popular BBC sci-fi programme will celebrate its half century birthday this November by using the latest technology to film the special episode, which will star Matt Smith as the titular Time Lord.

Head writer Steven Moffat can't wait to update the show and has compared the feeling the audience will experience to that being in the Doctor's TARDIS - known for its optical illusion of being smaller on the outside.

He said: ''It's about time. Technology has finally caught up with 'Doctor Who' and your television is now bigger on the inside. A whole new dimension of adventure for the Doctor to explore.''

The episode will begin filming in April and rumours suggest former Doctors Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant will make an appearance in the milestone birthday alongside Matt, who revealed the feature-length show will be ''big and bold and as brilliant'' as it ever has been.

Although the iconic franchise has a massive cult following, Steven admitted he feels ''tremendous pressure'' to please the fans and is aware he is unable to keep every viewer happy.

He recently explained: ''I'm writing the 50th anniversary episode right now and it's half exciting and it's half absolutely terrifying. I feel tremendous pressure not to let people down. So that's very hard.

''You can't please everybody all the time and it's a mistake in a way to try. But you don't want anybody to feel let down by a big anniversary episode.''

'Doctor Who' returns to BBC One on March 30 for a total of eight episodes.
