Django Django - Django Django Spent $144 Making Mercury Prize-nominated Album

31 October 2012

Rising Scottish act Django Django spent just $144 (£90) creating their Mercury Prize-nominated album.

The psychedelic quartet's self-titled debut is going up against records by acts including Plan B and rocker Richard Hawley for the prestigious accolade, and drummer Dave MCLean reveals the project was made on a tiny budget using everyday items.

He tells Scotland's Daily Record newspaper, "The album came out in January after we recorded it in my bedroom. We had a minimal amount of equipment. We spent about £90 on the album and most of that was on a microphone I bought in Perth.

"We had a bit of a drum kit and (bandmember) Vinnie had a guitar which we tuned down to make a bass guitar sound. That was it. Two bits of drum kit, a mike and a guitar. We were hitting things like phone books and deodorant cans to get the sounds we needed."

The winner of the Mercury Prize, which is awarded annually to the most influential British album of the previous 12 months, will be revealed at a prizegiving in London on Thursday (01Nov12) and the act will receive a $32,000 (£20,000) cheque.
