Diversity Stalls In Tv Writers' Rooms
Despite Hollywood's frequent boasts that it is encouraging diversity in the writers' rooms at TV production companies and networks, little progress has in fact taken place in recent years, and in many cases, appears to have fallen backwards, according to a study released Thursday by the Writers Guild of America. The study, Hollywood Writers Report Recession and Regression, conducted from 2008 through 2009, found that while the number of female TV writers remained stable ("still a very low 28 percent") the earnings gap between male and female writers widened 84 percent from the previous report. Among racial minorities, the earnings gap widened to the largest level in a decade. The report blamed the recession for the lack of progress.
