Shailene Woodley Says Her 'Divergent' Character Is Not A Superhero
Actress Shailene Woodley will take the lead role in dystopian sci fi movie Divergent in a film that showed at Comic-Con 2013.
She may have had a crushing Amazing Spiderman 2 rejection to deal with but Shailene Woodley has been picked up my a new and exciting action franchise, Divergent, that will see the young actress play a teenager caught in a dystopian world where citizens are divided into factions based on their traits.
Shailene Woodley Appeared At This Year's Comic-Con.
Pitted as the new Hunger Games, the Divergent movie will be adapted from the young adult sci fi trilogy written by Veronica Roth. Speaking from this year's Comic-Con, author Roth spoke of her disbelief of the success of her fast-paced fiction, saying "My brain is not grasping a lot right now."
Woodley, who stars as lead character Tris who must decide which faction she wants to join, spoke of the role: "I never saw [Tris] as a superhero or action star. She's a normal young woman who had to figure herself out and help the community around her."
The film will see Woodley as Tris undergo rigorous mental and physical initiation challenges to join her chosen faction; all the while guarding a secret that if let out, could have grave consequences for the 16 year-old.
Theo James Plays Four; Tris' Love Interest.
Directed by Neil Burger (The Illusionist, Limitless), Divergent is set to be the first of three films, with Insurgent and Allegiant to follow. Alongside Woodley will star Kate Winslet, Ashley Judd, Jai Courtney, and Theo James - the latter of whom play Four; an older man and Tris' instructor who the teenager falls for.
Having only wrapped filming three days ago, Divergent is already tipped as the next big teen franchise, after the The Hunger Games and Twilight movies. It has already been noted by The Wrap that all three series are linked by "unexceptional but admirable young women placed in highly unusual situations" - a depart from the traditional male protagonist-led action narratives.
Kate Winslet Will Star As Jeanine Matthews In Divergent.
There are extremely high expectations for the film adaptation after the success of the novels, which will prove a challenge for director Burger. As the Divergent panel emerged at Comic-Con to camera flashes and a sea of excitement, the gobsmacked cast realised the film was going to be huge.
