Disney Suspends Operations In Japan

With the threat of a nuclear disaster in Japan unabated a week after the earthquake/tsunami disaster, the Walt Disney Co. said on Thursday that it is suspending its operations in the country. Some of them have already been closed, including its administrative offices, Disney Stores and its two theme parks, Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea. It was uncertain whether the decision will affect production of The Wolverine , which is scheduled to begin shooting in Japan in July after scenes in New York are filmed beginning next month. (That film encountered another setback on Thursday when director Darren Aronofsky announced that he was pulling out of the production, citing the strain on his family that would result from his being abroad for so long.) In a statement published today (Friday) by the Los Angeles Times , Disney said "Our top priority is the wellbeing of our employees and their families during this challenging time and we will continue to closely monitor the situation as it develops." It did not indicate whether it plans to evacuate any of the employees during the current emergency.
