Theater owners have been demanding to know how successful DirecTV has been in renting video-on-demand movies for $30 while they are still in theaters. So far, neither the movie studios nor DirectTV is saying, but apparently rival satellite operator DISH network has got word that enough people are willing to shell out the 30 bucks to make it consider launching a similar early-release service. In an interview with Bloomberg News, DISH executive vice president Tom Cullen said that it is likely to follow suit and offer Home Premiere, featuring new movies (about 60 days old) from Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, Universal, and Sony. Paramount and Disney are the two studios holding back for now.
