Did Tarantino Really Cut Django Before China Screening?
Days after it was reported that Quentin Tarantino was reediting his Django Unchained to make it acceptable to Chinese censors, the film opened and was quickly shut down, even while it was playing in some theaters, published reports said on Wednesday. An official at a Shanghai theater told Reuters, We were only told that it was due to some technology problems and were told to cancel it. They didn't tell us when the film would be shown again. The manager of a theater in Kumming told the Associated Press said that he had received an order to cancel screenings of the film from China Film Group -- the first time he had ever received such a call. Britain's Guardian newspaper observed that many online commenters appeared perplexed by the cancellations because the film had passed China's notoriously opaque pre-screening censorship process.
