Did Families Stay Home To See The Oscars Sunday?

Not as many parents took their kids to see Gnomeo and Juliet on Sunday as Disney had originally estimated. Final weekend box-office figures for the movie turned out to be $13.4 million -- well below the $14.2 million that the studio had calculated it would make. (Weekend estimates are based on actual grosses for Friday and Saturday and an educated guess on Sunday's returns.) The result was that the Farelly brothers' critically panned Hall Pass passed Gnomeo in the final tally to take first place with $13.5 million. The debuting Nicolas Cage thriller Drive Angry looked certain to irritate Summit Entertainment's investors as the $75-million flick opened in ninth place with just $5.2 million. It was hard to figure out whether Paramount's decision to remove 30 minutes of footage from Justin Bieber Never Say Never and replace it with 40 minutes of new scenes resulted in repeat ticket sales for the "director's fan cut." The movie dropped a modest 30 percent from the previous week to $9.4 million to bring its total to $63 million, an amazing birthday present for the personable teen star who turned 17 today (Tuesday). Overall, the box office was down 9.9 percent from the comparable week a year ago. For the year to date, total revenue is down 21 percent, while attendance is down 22 percent from last year.
